# Why CAT Software Changes Slowly: Continuity, Cost, and Tradeoffs

Why established CAT workflows change slowly, what continuity protects, where friction remains, and how to weigh the real cost of a reporter's software.

## Key takeaways

- Continuity protects muscle memory and production reliability, but can normalize structural friction.
- The real switching cost lives in dictionaries, formats, macros, integrations, and working knowledge.
- Measure duplicate entry and handoff failures across the entire job, not only the CAT application.
- Judge new tools by tested contracts for platforms, data, recovery, exports, and pricing.

If you trained on Eclipse or Case CATalyst, much of today's workflow would look familiar. The core
jobs remain translation, dictionary maintenance, realtime, editing, formatting, and delivery. That
continuity protects hard-earned muscle memory and production reliability. It can also make structural
friction easy to accept as permanent.

## Continuity and active development

Both vendors continue to release features and updates. Advantage describes current Eclipse work in
realtime, team editing, transcript delivery, and dictionary automation.[1] Stenograph currently publishes
CATalyst version 22 downloads and maintains tools for realtime, editing, audio, and backup.[2][3]
The accurate question is not whether either product changes at all. It is whether the whole working
system changes as quickly as the surrounding legal workflow.

## The reporter workstation is still Windows-centered

The current operating-system requirements are direct and specific. Advantage's
[Eclipse page](https://www.eclipsecat.com/Eclipse) recommends Windows 10 Professional or above. It
says Eclipse runs on a Mac with Windows 10, through Boot Camp or Parallels, that it does not recommend
Parallels, and that Apple M1 Macs are incompatible.[1]
Stenograph's [CATalyst requirements](https://solutioncenter.stenograph.com/catalyst/systemrequirements),
updated April 15, 2026, require Windows 11 and say CATalyst is not compatible with Mac computers.[3]

A client may view realtime in a browser or read a PDF on another platform, but that is different from
the reporter's CAT application running natively there. Evaluate each part of the workflow separately.

## The switching cost lives in working knowledge

A reporter's dictionary, briefs, formats, macros, keyboard habits, writer connection, and delivery
process represent years of accumulated work. RTF/CRE provides an interchange route, and Stenograph
documents [import](https://solutioncenter.stenograph.com/en_US/import/importrtf) and
[export](https://solutioncenter.stenograph.com/en_US/export/exportrtf). Even so, a conversion may not
preserve every system-specific behavior or layout.[4][5] The real switching cost includes testing and
rebuilding, not only buying another license.

> **Figure.** What a switch moves: the license on top, and under it the years of working knowledge a conversion has to carry or rebuild. Drawing: A thin license card resting on a tall stack of working knowledge: dictionary and briefs, formats and macros, keyboard habits, writer connection, and delivery process.

That creates a reasonable bias toward a familiar system. It is not proof of bad intent by a vendor.
It is a reminder to keep native backups, maintain interchange copies, and periodically test whether
critical work can be restored or moved.

## What reporters work around

The CAT application is only one part of producing the record. Scheduling, confirmations, exhibits,
remote attendance, transcript repositories, invoicing, copy orders, and reporter payments may live in
other systems. Some integration is useful; some teams still re-key the same job data across calendars,
spreadsheets, portals, and accounting tools.

The cost is not just subscription or license spend. It is duplicate entry, unclear ownership, missed
handoffs, inconsistent file naming, and time spent reconciling systems. Measure those steps during a
normal job before deciding which problem deserves new software.

## Price is visible, but total cost still needs work

As of October 9, 2026, the official stores listed
[Eclipse Steno at $4,499](https://www.eclipsecat.com/Eclipse) and
[Case CATalyst Pro at $4,299](https://www.stenograph.com/catalyst-pro-39441), before tax and optional
products or services. Both include one year of support and updates.[1][6] Ongoing support, add-ons, hardware,
training, and migration time still belong in a multi-year comparison.

## A better standard for new tools

New software should be judged by evidence rather than by whether it looks modern. Ask whether it:

- states its release stage and supported platforms clearly;
- preserves the responsible professional's authority;
- publishes supported inputs and exports;
- explains data handling and retention;
- survives a realistic backup and restore test;
- discloses pricing and paid terms before purchase.

DepoStack's own product pages state their release stage at the top, starting with
